IMPORTANT DRUNK DRIVING FACTS

When it comes to drunk driving, the abbreviations OUIL, DUI and OWI are used pretty interchangeably. In Michigan, the offense of drunk driving is really known as “operating while intoxicated” (OWI). Drug-related vehicle offenses are known as operating under the influence or with the presence of drugs and are abbreviated as OWPD or OUID. Felony drunk driving charges may be prosecuted when the offender is charged with third lifetime offense or in cases involving an injury or death.

On the contrary, in cases of criminal acts, such as driving under the influence, there are provisions which provide for the exclusion of coverage. In these cases, court may order the payment of restitution to victim or victims family. Restitution is used to cover personal injuries, medical care, lost wages and damage to property.
